This setup, played in Round 6 of the Timber Moose Chess18 event, goes back to 1875.

Chess18

Chess18 is the name given the subset of Chess960 where:
  • The king is on the E file
  • The rooks are in the corners
There are 18 possible setups which meet this criteria, hence Chess18.

There’s a lot to be said about Chess18; it gives enough variety to allow people to concentrate on play instead of memorizing openings. It does not alter any rules of chess (no complicated castling rules) in any way; the only thing that changes is the opening setup.

Tinder Moose 2023

There recently was a Chess18 event where a lot of strong players played each other.

Choosing a setup

I will look at two different ways to choose a Chess18 setup involving using a single 20-sided dice, readily available at any gaming or hobbyist store.

The Timber Moose method

In the Timber Moost Chess18 competition, they chose a Chess18 setup by rolling a 20-sided dice. The results were this; note that three setups appear twice, and that Classic Chess (Chess1) is not listed:

I have done a 35-ply evaluation of each setup; above, next to the setup, we can see the White advantage in centipawns, along with the “rank” of the setup, where more balanced setups have a higher (i.e. lower numbered) rank.

A roll of 19 plays Classic Chess, but with White’s first move forced to be either 1. Nc3 or 1. a3 (White’s choice). These are good “pie rule” moves which equalize the position for Black (while Stockfish thinks 1. a3 favors Black, and that 1. Nc3 is balanced, White has slightly better results with 1. a3 in human play compared to 1. Nc3).

The evaluations of these positions are based on Stockfish18 doing a 35-ply score of all 18 positions, looking at all 20 possible opening moves.
